7 Handy iPhone Apps For Your Work

November 4th, 2009 (7:00am) Aliza Sherman 6 Comments

iphoneWe at WebWorkerDaily review a lot of web apps. Since many of us — and many of you — have iPhones, I like to keep tabs on web apps we’ve written about, to see whether they get a companion iPhone app. So here’s a list of seven useful iPhone apps for some of the better web apps that we’ve reviewed.

  1. Shoeboxed. Organize your receipts and business cards through this service (see our review here). With the web app, you scan in what you want to save and organize or mail in your “shoebox” of items to scan and let Shoeboxed do it for you. The results are searchable and easy to organize. With the iPhone app, you can take a photo to digitize a receipt or card. Read the rest of this entry »

SugarSync and Your Virtual Team

November 3rd, 2009 (6:30am) Aliza Sherman 3 Comments

sugarsync_500x75File sync and backup service SugarSync (which we’ve blogged about before) just announced new small-business friendly features, including a central admin feature to manage from three to 100 users collaborating and sharing files using the app. The new package also includes flexible group pricing plans starting at $29.99 per month, with no setup fees and free phone support.

While speaking with the CEO of SugarSync, I quickly realized that my post about running a virtual team was missing a critical component: backup. As I listened to the company’s presentation of its product, my mind began working overtime. SugarSync isn’t just about backing up files securely in the cloud. It can also be used for secure file sharing, collaboration and file syncing with cross-platform and mobile device access and compatibility. Read the rest of this entry »

SugarSync Goes Free

Good news! SugarSync, a file synchronization and backup service for PC and Mac (reviewed positively here on WWD), today started offering free accounts (previously the cheapest option was $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year.)

The catch is that free accounts are limited to 2GB of storage, which will be inadequate for backing up large collections of files or music, but for syncing a few big files between machines — accessing project files on the road, for example — it could be very useful.

SugarSync differentiates itself from its competitors (like Dropbox) by offering comprehensive mobile support, with clients for iPhone/iPod Touch, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile devices. The free accounts announced today include access to the mobile clients.

Let us know what you think of SugarSync in the comments.

HP Jumps Into Online Storage Fray with Upline

logoFollowing on the heels of DropBox, SugarSync, and Box.Net, HP has officially announced Upline, a storage service that is useful for those who are seeking a way to share files with others or take advantage of online backup.

Online storage has its advantages.  Your files are available remotely from any computer you have HP’s software installed on.  If you migrate computers, you just download your files onto the new machine.  Also, Upline will grant you a URL to easily share files with co-workers and friends/family.

To kick things off, HP is offering businesses and consumers a free 1 year subscription to their limited service.

These free accounts grant users 1GB of storage.  For unlimited storage, HP is charging between $59-299 per year, depending on how many users/PCs will have access.

Unfortunately, the software only works on Windows PCs.  If you’re seeking a service like this for use between Mac and Windows computers, take a look at DropBox.  Their free service provides 5GB of disk space.  However, having the HP brand behind your online storage solution is an attractive trait.
