Insurance policies to cover loss in this event is a interesting idea. Maybe service providers might start adding it in as an optional extra?

I love cloud-based services, but this illustrates what will probably prove to be the biggest problem with using online services for storage, backup and other functions. What will happen for instance the day that one of the really big online storage services (Amazon for instance) decide that they are closing down?

For mission critical applications one needs to consider future reliability when choosing a cloud-based storage solution. Otherwise one needs to factor in the eventual cost of moving data source from time to time. Not fun!

Perhaps we will one day see insurance policies to cover such eventualities...
