A very good description of general teacher tools, however there are also dedicated teacher tools (check www.standardstoolbox.com for a few examples).

If students aren’t interested in creating their own forum (and want to reap the benefits of a pre-existing, large base of contributors)a helpful site is Cramster.com

It features Q&A boards which follow the forum model– users ask questions and the community– including subject experts– provide answers.

Students may also want to check out Intervals for web-based project management experience. There is a free plan that is ideal for those who need a lightweight version of the app.

A great tool for teachers & students: TiddlyWiki (http://tiddlywiki.com).

Have the teacher open a site at http://tiddlyspot.com (free and no ads) and tell the students the url of the file.

Have the students go there and grab a copy of the file to store on their own computer/jumpdrive.

After each session the teacher updates the TiddlyWiki, and then the students use the built in 'import' feature to import the latest notes/assignments.

Students can add in their own notes and such.

As a student, in my third year i did use DeskAway. It was useful for 2 of my projects which had tight schedules. On the free plan its 3 projects over 5 people which is perfect for students. I think its a Wiki Cum Forum along with PM abilites.

DeskAway has got quite a few universities and students on its free and paid plans! The key is adoption and having the service really inexpensive to use. Plus, most students are on one of the popular social networking sites. Its important for a pm tool to have concepts of social networking for collaboration and sharing.
:-)

Its great to see Web Worker Daily focusing on tools that can be used for academia. More and more courses are becoming hybrid and the tools for the classroom should be evolving just as quickly if not more so for those not in school.

I'm in a graduate program in library science. My introductory reference class was done online. As a supplement to the courseware, we used a wiki to collaborate on our group projects. I can't imagine doing it the old-fashioned way, by emailing a document round and round and round among 4 or 5 people.
