Free Tutorials on HTML 5 and More

September 11th, 2008 (4:00pm) Samuel Dean 5 Comments

I’ve written before about W3Schools, which is one of the best, free online places to learn and practice web development skills. The site has long had interactive tutorials that can teach you everything from JavaScript to DHTML, complete with opportunities for you to see how your coding and tagging will look when published on the web. The site has added some tutorials on cutting-edge topics which may be of interest to web workers.

I’ve been experimenting with W3Schools’ tutorial on HTML 5, which is getting support in a lot of popular applications, with emphasis in the upcoming version 3.1 of the Firefox browser. If you haven’t worked with HTML 5, it’s worth taking a look at the tutorial.

The HTML 5 working group includes AOL, Apple, Google, IBM, Microsoft, Mozilla, Nokia, Opera and many more companies. According to W3Schools: “Some of the new features in HTML 5 are functions for embedding audio, video, graphics, client-side data storage, and interactive documents. HTML 5 also contains new elements like <nav>, <header>, <footer>, and <figure>.”

The video and audio aspects of HTML 5 are particularly notable. Some observers feel that HTML 5’s facility with video may start to limit all the annoying, resource-intensive instances of Flash that we run into online.

Web workers can find many more tutorials on popular web development topics at W3Schools. Try the AJAX tutorial and the CSS Examples just for starters.

Another great thing about the ideas in 5 is things like mark, meter and date which fill bigger gaps than the like of nav and footer, to my mind. The idea of server sent events looks like the start of a fundamental shift away from the limits of traditional HTTP.
