Oursignal’s Patchwork Quilt of News

June 18th, 2008 (5:15am) Mike Gunderloy No Comments

ScreenshotIf you spend your days immersed in the web, you know there are a lot of ways to try to get the news that matters, from mainstream news sites to social networks to RSS feeds. New site oursignal is designed to take the firehose of information and make it obvious which stories are getting the most attention from fellow internet denizens, as well as which ones are gaining or fading in importance.

The site does this by grabbing information from Digg, Reddit, del.icio.us, and Hackernews, and combinining the votes from all four sites to get measures of importance and velocity. Then hyperlinked headlines are arranged on a single page, with the size of the box representing importance and color showing whether it’s moving up or down the charts. The result? A strangely addictive page that you can quickly scan down to whatever level of obsession you choose. If you spend part of your day bouncing around various social news sites, this alternative visualization is worth a look.
