"Seriously now … what are the chances this upcoming version of Dreamweaver is any good? Are there people that actually still use it? Really?"

Are there people that don't? Dreamweaver is the #1 development tool utilized by web developers above any other. Maybe YOUR method of coding/designing is obscure, or maybe you just don't have the necessary skill-set to utilize the application to make it work for you. I just don't see how anyone on a professional level would think that hard-coding functions and scripts is efficient. Not efficient in accuracy, but in-efficient from a project life cycle perspective.

"The current version is a steaming piece of crap… I still have to go back and fire up Version 8 when it hangs up and bombs out. ugh."

You should probably install a legit version on your system first, and then see if the issues cease. If you do have a legit install, then contact support. After all, you are entitled to support by proxy of purchase.

What viable alternatives are there? I find Dreamweaver is overkill. On the other hand I haven't found a decent low-joule non-wysiwyg html editor.

Sadly, many people still need to use it for many projects, like me. The current version is a steaming piece of crap... I still have to go back and fire up Version 8 when it hangs up and bombs out. ugh.
