Dreamweaver CS4 Hits Beta

Adobe is out with a beta release of “the next version of Dreamweaver” – which, of course, everyone is just going to call Dreamweaver CS4 until we’re told otherwise. The new release builds on Dreamweaver’s existing tools and integration with the Adobe product line, while adding some new features that are designed to make it easier than ever to build error-free, standards-compliant sites. There’s been a visual refresh as well, which brings it closer to the other current Adobe applications.
New features in this release include WebKit-based rendering for a live view of your pages as you work on them, easy navigational aids to find related files and code that affects the current selection, and code hints for Ajax and JavaScript frameworks. Collaborating developers will appreciate the Subversion integration, while relatively new folks will benefit from the CSS best practice advice. There’s also fresh support for building AIR applications. Anyone can try the beta for a two-day grace period; if you’ve got an existing Dreamweaver license, it will unlock for 30 days.

Seriously now … what are the chances this upcoming version of Dreamweaver is any good? Are there people that actually still use it? Really?

Sadly, many people still need to use it for many projects, like me. The current version is a steaming piece of crap… I still have to go back and fire up Version 8 when it hangs up and bombs out. ugh.

What viable alternatives are there? I find Dreamweaver is overkill. On the other hand I haven’t found a decent low-joule non-wysiwyg html editor.

Are there people that don’t? Dreamweaver is the #1 development tool utilized by web developers above any other. Maybe YOUR method of coding/designing is obscure, or maybe you just don’t have the necessary skill-set to utilize the application to make it work for you. I just don’t see how anyone on a professional level would think that hard-coding functions and scripts is efficient. Not efficient in accuracy, but in-efficient from a project life cycle perspective.

You should probably install a legit version on your system first, and then see if the issues cease. If you do have a legit install, then contact support. After all, you are entitled to support by proxy of purchase.
