I run into this all the time. Even if I say I'm a "Web Worker" the response is usually, "What?" I can't say Web Designer because I program too. I can't say Web Programmer because I design. Do Creative Directors configure Apache in FreeBSD? I don't think so. And I just lay carpeting on our office stairs. I'm getting used to the awkward silences. Funny. I run into this all the time. I find that being a woman, I don't get asked that question very often. It's usually, "What does your husband do?" or "Do you have any kids?" All other activites the I'll be layering on top of the content I produce -- podcasting, screencasting, affiliate marketing -- are technicalities, not the fundamental value I bring to my audience.
