I work for a company that is an advocate as well as a provider of Telework Management services. From a corporate perspective our clients are generally surprised to learn that, although Telework does provide important benefits to the employees (lower fuel consumption, lower daycare costs and Work/life balance), they are the real winners stating that while lowering Real Estate costs and positioning themselves as environmentally responsible they are also saving a tremendous amount of money due to higher employee retention rates. Second only to salary, the ability to telework is one of the main influences in job satisfaction. Now, if we can just get all companies to see the benefits and how important these benefits are to people with families and now, with the rising price of gas, to everyone.

I have been telecommuting since 1989, the first year it was actually feasible. I love the opportunity to work without distractions, without conversation and without direct competition in matters that don't have anything to do with work. After decades as a business magazine writer, I now have the dream job of working as a knowledge center manager for the best business productivity outfit in the world while sitting at my desk in an office I designed myself, listening to Diana Krall instead of Musak and being interrupted only by the occasional mew of a kitten.
Yeah. Telecommuting is certainly for me.

Shane, indyhall looks like a great option. They have plans to expand too. It would be a good model for a franchise. I also found this wiki which seems to have sites all over the world: http://coworking.pbwiki.com/. Thanks!

FWIW, came across this a while back http://www.indyhall.org/ but from what I gather, it is not commonplace yet. And we have nothing even close to it in NZ. I have seen some mention of coworking places in Australia though.

I've been working from home for the last 10 months now as a software developer. I'm in Houston and my client is in Virginia. I've met my boss one time and that was after working for 6 months. The only thing I miss is lunch out with co-workers. That's about it. I don't know if I'll ever again be able to take a job that requires a long (> 20 minute) commute now that I've worked from home.
