Wake up and Smell the Brain Food

April 4th, 2008 (8:00am) Mike Gunderloy 2 Comments

Good news for coffeeshop-hopping web workers: not only does coffee smell good and keep them from kicking you out while you use the free wireless, it’s also good for your brain. At least, that’s the conclusion of a study in the Journal of Neuroinflammation, which suggests that caffeine supplements blocked some of the normally-bad effects of a high-cholesterol diet – specifically the changes that appear to be one of the underlying mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease.

Of course, this is the news of a single study performed on rabbits, who are tough to train as web workers. And the health effects of caffeine have been long debated. But hey, I’ll take any excuse I can get to justify the bedouin lifestyle.

  • Hi Mike,

Very interesting re: the connection between Alzheimer’s, caffeine, and how caffeine can help a high-cholesterol diet. I’d rather take the other route though, and stick to whole foods so that I don’t have high-cholesterol! :)
