Ringside Wants to add the Social to Your Network

April 4th, 2008 (2:22pm) Mike Gunderloy 1 Comment

ScreenshotSocial networks are everywhere now. Not only do web workers participate in them (perhaps out of proportion to our numbers, given the amount of time we spend on the web), but increasingly, those of us who do design and development are being asked to build them. There are a number of white-label social network solutions out there that you can customize for clients, but Ringside Networks have a different idea: the “social application server.”

The basic idea with Ringside is that you use their software to add social capabilities to an existing website, rather than building a new social site. Not only do they have the now-standard applications such as user profiles, friends, ratings, comments, and so on built in, but they’re got pluggable extensions to integrate with other software. Notably, they allow you to consume Facebook applications within your own site – which may be a boon for both designers and Facebook app builders. The software is released under LGPL and you can download and play with it at no charge.

Sound cool. The other “white label” sites, although customizable, seem to have too tight an idea of what a social site should be (ofter very MySpace like, with photo and video galleries), which doesn’t suit many businesses.
