Web Worker Daily is Hiring!

March 16th, 2008 (9:00am) Judi Sohn 15 Comments

As of March 29, 2008 we are no longer looking for additional regular contributors. However, feel free to continue sharing articles with us through Google Docs with us and we will consider you for future opportunities and/or guest posts. Thanks!

Have you been reading our little blog and been thinking, “Oh come on, I could do that!” Now here’s your chance.

We’re looking to add a few more writers to our team. We’re looking for folks who can commit to write 2 posts (on average) a week. Sometimes you’ll be assigned a topic or product to write about based on what we know you’re interested in and what’s hot at the moment. Other times you’ll be expected to generated your own ideas and manage your own time.

The focus of this blog is working in the new digital age. That can mean anything from mobile devices, web applications, lifestyle adjustments, business relationships, freelancing, etc. It’s not just work-from-home folks. It’s not just the self-employed. And it’s not just web developers.

You’ll be paid per post on a monthly basis and will be expected to e-sign an agreement with Giga Omni Media, our parent company.

Interested? Read on to find out how to apply…

  1. Write a sample post of 300-600 words telling us your web working story. Maybe it’s how you switched to a web working lifestyle fulltime. Maybe it’s some insight into how you use your favorite web app. Maybe it’s something about your career ambitions that would be interesting and relevant to your fellow web worker. Regardless of whether or not we offer you a regular gig, we’ll consider all entries for guest posts and you will be compensated in the form of an Amazon gift certificate if that happens.
  2. Put the post in a Google Doc and share with judi(at)gigaom.com. Please do not email your submission to me directly or send as an attachment. Frankly, if you don’t have a Gmail or Google Apps account you probably wouldn’t last long on this blog anyway.
  3. Put your name as the title of the document. At the top of the post, be sure to include your contact information (email and phone is enough). If you’ve written for other sites, including a personal blog, be sure to mention it with URLs.
  4. At the bottom of your sample post, list 3-5 topic ideas that you’d like to write about for WWD. If a title isn’t enough to give me an idea of your “beat,” then you can be a little more descriptive but you don’t have to go into a lot of detail. We just want to see how you’d best contribute to the site on an ongoing basis.

Good luck, and I’m looking forward to working with you!

how restrictive is your agreement? i write for several of my own blogs. i’d hate to non-compete myself out of free expression.

Mike Gunderloy says: March 17th, 2008 6:59pm

Mike, all of us who are already writing for WWD have our own blogs as well - most of us more than one. You shouldn’t find the contract to be an issue, I believe.

As Mike said, we all write elsewhere, so don’t worry about that. It’s more important that the content posted here is original.

As a matter of fact, we prefer folks who have experience writing for other sites, even if it’s a hobby/volunteer job.

Judi,

Just wanted to drop a quick note and let you know that I updated the Google Doc I have shared with you. I added some information about a new blog that I just started.

Thanks!

John

Shared my application via Google Docs. Although I didn’t send an email notice because you mentioned not wanting to receive emails.

When is the deadline? When will you be making decisions? Thanks!

Judi Sohn says: March 19th, 2008 12:21pm

Thanks all… I’m reading through and contacting folks slowly… we’re looking to add folks over time, so if you don’t hear from us right away hang in there. Even if we don’t have a regular gig for you, I may contact you to work on a guest post depending on the area you expressed interest in writing about.
