it is their responsibility to remove the ads, and warn the buyers and providers not to do it anymore, the cheesy lame excuse that it is standard of living is not right, the standard of living they mean is POVERTY

I'd agree with Dawn. The idea that you have to "work your way up" at $1-2/hour before you can be paid a reasonable wage is ridiculous. Whether you support globilization or not, the fact is that Odesk relies on undercutting what would be a living wage here in the US.

I make no excuses. I know the rates that are asked for across the board. It seems to me that you are the one making excuses.

Have a great and successful day!

whatever nut bar, the fact of the matter I have proof they allow postings of 25 cents it is against fair trade laws, keep making lame excuses though

it has nothing to do with the fact of employment, I write and make money then my husband makes thousands a month, I do not even need to work sweetie, I did it to save money in our account, that was all

I have links and proof that they allow these postings to go through

25 cents an hour, I do not know how they sleep at night

As has been stated to you before Dawn, the providers are the problem in as far as 1-2 an hour. Not oDesk. As long as there are those out there willing to be paid that little, it will remain. The simple fact is you weren't going to get paid what you felt you were worth right off the bat so you complained that oDesk was responsible for keeping people in poverty. I started out at a much lower rate at oDesk and worked my way up. Just like everyone else. You don't get to start out as the President of the company no matter how much you stomp your foot, Dawn.

no they pay people 1-2 an hour which is disgusting, that is why I left, you have no conscious to continue working for them while the rest of those people make 1-2 an hour it is disgusting

as long as you make your 33 an hour susanne that is all you care about, it has nothing to do with unhappy with their service, I get paid to write now I really do not care, I care about those poor people making less then poverty, as you close your eyes to it so you do not feel guilt over taking money from them

I can tell you without a doubt that the previous comment was made by someone who was not happy with their results. It's well known that oDesk has providers from all over the world and hourly rates in some countries are not the same as hourly rates in North America. oDesk does not make the hourly rates, the providers do.

Odesk does not believe in fair trade, some of their workers make 1-2 an hour, I bailed out of their because it is wrong, ethically to allow it. then others who do the same type of work can not find employment because of the wolves in sheeps clothing hiring these individuals for 1-2 an hour

@Rod, hmmm...I guess I missed the announcement about RAC offering Payoneer as an option. However, it would cost over twice as much to get money from RAC via Payoneer as it does to get paid from oDesk ($2 from oDesk, $5 from RAC)...that coupled with the $20 up-front fee (which I didn't have to worry about with oDesk) and the $3.00 monthly fee (only $1.00 on my oDesk card) makes it not a very attractive option IMO.

Glad to see you offer it though.

hm. Odesks' average rates are $14-15, before their 10% comes out. So, about $12-13 for coders.

in an earlier web worker post,
http://webworkerdaily.com/2008/02/26/web-work-in-the-era-of-free/
"Unless $12 an hour is an attractive rate for you, it’s time to bail out of such commodity activities."

$12 an hour for programming is a good deal in India, Bulgaria, etc. For US coders, not so good. I can make that much as a janitor at my church, without having to install a spybot on my computer and have every minute of my day monitored.

This is the first I've heard of this service, and it seems to be fairly popular and successful. But because of the "desktop screenshots" aspect of this, I don't think it's for someone like me. The reason I became an independent was to get away from others controlling and watching over how I spend my time.

First, not ALL the time I bill clients is spent at the computer--making this a flawed system for me. Then, there's the whole privacy thing. I'm not going to agree for someone to take intervalled snapshots of my computer doings--and risk exposing information they're not supposed to be privy to--just so my client can feel secure that I'm actually doing work?

In my mind, this sort of system would seem to promote the same distrust between clients and freelancers that exists between bosses and their employees. ("I've got to 'supervise' what you do, to make sure it's getting done.")

@NatalieMac - Providers are able to enter time spent away from the computer as "offline" time. We don't guarantee payment for offline time (e.g., the buyer can dispute the time), so we encourage buyers and providers to discuss expectations for this type of work before it happens.

We take privacy very seriously and oDeskTeam has a number of privacy features built in. For instance, oDeskTeam will show you a balloon notification (e.g., a task tray pop-up like the one you might get if someone pings you on Skype) whenever it takes a screenshot. You can discard the screenshot before it is uploaded to oDesk if you wish. You can even delete screenshots from your oDesk work diary after upload if needed. Many of these settings are configurable, so you can configure a work environment that works for you.

Mike - Thanks for this post. We appreciate your interest in oDesk and the feedback from WWD readers.

@AaCc - To clarify, it's free for providers to join oDesk and free to apply to jobs. It's also free to post jobs. oDesk only charges if you earn money. We keep 10% of any compensation that is earned through the system.

@Rod - We agree that being able to verify remote work and track time is differentiated and oDesk is the only service that brings that capability. oDesk has also innovated in a number of other important ways. Some examples:

**We are the only solution that guarantees payment to providers for hourly work
**Other services may offer skills tests, but oDesk has invested in test quality at an entirely different level. See our blog post on this topic: http://www.odesk.com/blog/2008/01/power-of-community-feedback/
**As far as I know, oDesk is the only service that offers free skills tests. Other services charge as much as $25/test. We want all of our providers to have a chance to validate their skills, so we don't charge for the privilege of taking a test
**While it is true that other services now support Payoneer, oDesk was the Payoneer pioneer :) ...we were the first company to offer remote workers access to their earnings via a debit card
**oDesk is very transparent. We expose an unparalleled amount of data about marketplace activities in the oConomy. This information helps both buyers and providers optimize their activities on oDesk.

Best of all, we think the best innovations from oDesk are yet to come. We have several new announcements coming in the first half of this year that we believe will again be game-changing for this space.

Best,

Brian

I'd be curious to know how oDesk tracks and confirms time spent away from the computer - such as on the phone or in person meetings with the client or time spent sketching or drawing ideas with pencil and paper. I suppose with a client meeting, the client wouldn't be likely to question the time, but what about non-computer-based work time?

The screen shot feature of the tracking software is a bit worrisome. What if out of 2 hours straight working on a project, I checked my email for 10 seconds and a sensitive email for another client was screenshot and sent? I don't mind a tracker tracking my general activity - what programs I have open, how often I'm using the mouse/keyboard, etc., but it could be a real privacy issue.
