If you still believe that the New York Times covers “all the news that’s fit to print,” you’ll be heartened by a story in today’s business section: They’re Working on Their Own, Just Side by Side. In it, the Times covers coworking, from the start of the movement in Brad Neuberg’s mind to its current state of adoption in multiple cities around the world.

Overall, it’s a positive piece. They cover the upside of coworking (the sends of community, the fact that many people are more effective when working in groups) and give us vignettes from several coworking spaces. Being real journalists, of course, they’re compelled to balance the story: negatives include people poaching employees, loud cel phone conversations, and (horrors!) someone who wanted to bring a dog to a coworking space.

To their credit, the Times manages a link to the Coworking Wiki, but they miss some other resources. If you’re seriously interested in coworking and want to go beyond their “wow, isn’t this spiffy” coverage, you’ll also want to check out the Coworking Google Group and the Coworking Group Blog. All in all, though, it’s nice to get some positive coverage in the mainstream media for one of the new ways that web workers get the job done.
