Very Cool Contest: Win a Virtual Assistant for 2008

December 19th, 2007 (4:00am) Anne Zelenka 4 Comments

Are there tasks you need to do on your computer, on the web, or on the phone that you’d rather not do yourself? Tasks that take you away from more satisfying or more lucrative projects? Maybe you need a virtual assistant — an administrative helper who works remotely on tasks of your choosing.

Virtual assistants can help with research or accounting or even finding a good carpet installer in your area — anything that doesn’t require face to face interaction, but can be done remotely with a computer and a phone.

Now you can win the help of one, just in time for the new year.

Elance, an online marketplace for service professionals, has just announced a contest in which you can win a grand prize of $5,000 towards virtual assistant help.

Three runners up will win $500 credits towards virtual assistant help and 10 honorable mentions will receive a complimentary copy of The 4-Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss.

All you have to do is register as an Elance member then send Elance your answer to the question “How would you use a virtual assistant to grow your business or improve your personal life?” You can submit your answer in written, audio, or video form.

Share your answer in the comments: how would you use a virtual assistant to grow your business or improve your personal life in 2008?

  • OK, let’s get this straight:

Elance, in an effort to promote their service, is financing a few of their customers’ interactions with their subcontractors? Wonderful. Does Elance actually have any sort of controls in place to then make sure that the contractors are worth doing business with?

Being in the VA business, I’m pretty comfortable saying that while the concept of the VA is a great one, the execution as I’ve seen it to this point is (mostly) skewed toward getting results for the broker (Elance), rather than for the customer. And the actual service provider? All but out-in-the-cold.

Hey wait . . . I think I just did a holiday contest too! Here’s the pitch: “Come Visit Us at Virtual VIP, and we’ll make your VA needs actually work out. For Everyone”.

  • A true virtual assistant is a person who owns their own business and pursues their own clientele. They don’t use agencies to get work for them, and they don’t do telecommuting or occasional on-the-fly projects. Virtual assistants partner with clients to form a collaborative working relationship. Their clients include businesses who fit into their chosen fields or specialties.
