I've only used Windows before and was finally about to make the switch to Apple's OS but was dissuaded by the high price tag. I can get the same or better specs on a PC laptop for much less. I also was worried about working remotely when I use a PC at work.

So I bought a Sony Vaio with Vista and added Office Professional this Christmas. Vista is not as bad as people made it out to be! It is much more user friendly (albeit with some mental adjusting particularly for Office toolbars) and I love the new filing and searching capabilities. I haven't had any problems uploading printers or software thus far. I don't feel so bad about skipping out on the Mac now.

I had the displeasure of doing some work for a friend who was running Vista, and was very unimpressed with what a user gets for the hardware requirements.

It is very nice looking on the surface, but that only gets you so far for so long.

At the end of the day, I'd rather be dedicating that extra RAM and processing power toward running a bunch of programs and having a few browsers open than supporting the OS.

It isn't as bad as I'd read and it looks good. Aside from having to figure out the file structure and defaults, my only ongoing issue has been with IE freezing. The thing that rankles most is the premium pricing and version lust marketing for something that, to a basic enduser like me, isn't too much more than a skin with widgets.

I noticed yesterday that copying files to and from a memory stick on Vista took about four seconds and a dialogue box showed the progress. That's not long (and it was just a few megabytes copied), but on OS X Tiger, this is done in literally an instant. Honestly!

Windows is set to default settings and it to access the memory stick I need to go through "My Computer" from the start menu as there is icon for it on the desktop. I also find removing the stick one step less on OSX and via the same icon used to open it, instead of a different route (via the taskbar icon) as on Vista.

I am running an Acer Aspire 5100-3825 with 1 GB of RAM and 120 GB HDD. You do not need 2 GB of RAM to make this OS work. I have the Readyboost in use utilizing a 2 GB SD card. This is my setup and I will not go back to XP. There have been a lot of updates and fixes to the OS over the past year. I would suggest using Vista for an extended period of time, instead of trying to microwave results with the system.

I recently purchased a budget laptop (Acer 5570Z) for about $599 at Best Buy and for another $90 I bought 2GB of RAM at NewEgg.com. It runs fine and I haven't had too many issues. Also students can get a full copy of Microsoft Office Ultimate for 59.00 at http://www.theultimatesteal.com/
Anyway you look at it this is a bargain. They will also mail you a backup DVD for 12.00
This may not seem like a budget deal but I remeber not that long ago a laptop was 1500+ and all this for under $800 is, IMHO, still a deal.

I have been using Vista for about 2 months and, while there have been some issues, for the most part I am very happy.

I run a Dell Inspiron 530 that has an Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.33 Ghz as well as 4GB of RAM. I use Vista Premium.

The most annoying thing for me is that I notice that programs take a while to do stuff. For example, deleting a ton of email in Outlook makes you wait a minute or so, and sometimes when you click on the bar it'll tell you that the program is not responding... then 30 seconds later everything works fine with that program.

I have had one blue screen though, and that was when i tried to use the Media Center part... I was just playing with it so I haven't gone back into it since then.

It does feel a little slower than XP though, but I am not sure if it is because of Vista being unwillingly slow, or if it is because of the animations... All the animations always seem to take the same amount of time, which is why I probably have the perception that it is running slower.

As a Linux user, I like Vista just fine. I think this is the first time that consumers have actually thought about the implications of using Windows products: having to buy additional hardware to support the OS, bloated source code requiring more hard drive space, lower performance in order to have lots of useless eye candy, legitimate users getting locked out of the OS because they upgraded hardware, intrusive security measures that overcompensate for poor security in the OS. The list goes on and on.

I was a pre-Win95 user and worked for years as an on-site tech support analyst in a Windows environment for years for a Big 3 automaker. I have a long history with Microsoft products but finally switched to Linux earlier this year after getting fed up with security issues, buggy patches, and having to do an annual Windows wipe-and-reinstall to keep the OS running at peak performance. I can run Linux on my old 650MHz laptop -- something Windows XP can't do so well.

Don't get me wrong. Windows is great for people like me. We make money when people hire us to fix their Windows computers.

I've been running Vista for about 3 months and it seems basically interchangeable with XP as far as experience goes. Hard for me to compare performance as I got it with a new laptop with greater RAM.

I'd agree with J. Pease: the disappointment stems from the length of time it took to develop Vista and hype about it. It's not horrible, just not that great.

i hate it. yes, it looks nice, but it's such a memory hog. i hate the "improved" security features. i would prefer minimalist design anyway, so maybe i'm not a good judge of that. i will probably go linux from here on out.

I've spent many hours trying to get Vista to cooperate with XP Pro in my LAN. Also, I've had updates disable features that had been working, like the Office 2003 apps. This is very costly, time-wise, for a Webworker in a home office.

I blogged about some of the technical glitches and fixes here.

I'm not running it after hear about compatibility issues with some of Adobe's software (Dreamweaver 8 mainly). Add to that, the resources required for the system, on top of the applications I run, and I decided against the Vista route.

Vista came as desperate attempt to get something out as MS had not done any major OS upgrade for 5 years. Many important features were left out as they were still not ready for prime time. So for me I would rather wait for the next version of OS to really make any judgments. Until then I am a happy Mac convert.
