Open Thread: Web Worker Thanksgiving

November 21st, 2007 (11:00am) Mike Gunderloy 3 Comments

Here in the USA, we’re coming up on the annual Thanksgiving holiday. Although my kids, at least, view this as simply a celebration of turkey-fueled gluttony, there is more to it than that. This is the time of year when we (at least in theory) take a few moments to reflect on the things that we’re thankful for.

Web workers, fortunate people that we are, have plenty to be thankful for. Right of the top of my head, I’m exceedingly thankful that I don’t have to go into an office every day, and that I can’t remember the last time that I put on a suit and tie. Being paid to spend time on the web, where I’d otherwise hang out for free, is also pretty nifty.

What about you? Which aspects of web work are you thankful for this year? Let’s share the upbeat aspects of this workstyle in the comments!

  • Among other things, I’m thankful that web work has been good for both the environment and my pocketbook. Our car, which turned a year old a few weeks ago, still has under 4800 miles on it. I shudder to think how much we’d be spending on gas if we actually had to commute!

Also, thankful that I didn’t have to choose between my career and raising my children. Because of webwork, I can do both fulltime.

  • I’m thankful for….

-being able to meet both my kids at the bus with a smile everyday
-being able to volunteer in their classrooms teaching computers
    -the best clients ever!
    -really cool work
    -no office politics
-not having to travel on snow days
-being able to watch my eyeTV while I work
    -the undo button

  • That it made my husband’s lay-off happy news instead of devastating news since the lay-off was the impetus for me to make the leap to full-time freelance with (so far) very happy results!
