WWD Coffee Break - Fusion, Phones & Commercials

November 13th, 2007 (8:00am) Mike Gunderloy 2 Comments

Sometimes Beta Isn’t Forever - And that’s the case with I Want Sandy, the automated personal assistant via email that we reviewed a while back. Yep, the beta tag has dropped from the site and now anyone can sign up for this offboard reminder and memory service.

Virtual Leopards Will Be Happier - With the release of VMware Fusion 1.1, offering more seamless integration of Windows and OS X than ever before. Better graphics support, more Boot Camp tricks, and iPhone syncing with Outlook are also on the improvements list.

They Haven’t Been in the News for Days - That may explain why Google decided to pony up (cue Dr. Evil voice) ten million dollars to entice developers to develop applications for their new “Android” mobile phone platform. It may be vaporware right now, but it sure is well-funded vaporware.

I’m Glad I Don’t Make That Many Calls - Someone asked on a mailing list today for recommendations of a service offering conference calls on demand. Suggestions included Powwownow, ReadyTalk, and FreeConference. Got your own favorite? Let us know what & why in the comments.

Making the Rounds: You can get a t-shirt with spaces to check off the social networks that you belong to (so people in the supermarket will know what you do with your life). Or you can visit a new social web site devoted entirely to TV commercials. Personally I don’t understand the attraction, but maybe I’m too old for this Web 2.0 stuff.

As for the Conference Calls, those are good solutions if everyone does not mind paying the long distance charges, unless you are local where these companies are based. But for better attendance to a Conference call, and as a courte4sy to the people who you are asking to connect with you, it is common in business for the moderator to pay for the call.

My company Great America Networks Conferencing offers toll-free service at the lowest rate available with no catches or tricks or minimums. Anyone contacting me from Web Worker Daily will get toll-free access for 5 cents per minute/connection. Lower than our advertised rate on our website at http://www.ganconference.com.

If you don’t mind the long distance charges, or their limitations (which aren’t many for a small time operation), then the companies mentioned in the article are all very reputable companies.

I’m happy to see the endorsement for FreeConference. We serve thousands of SMB’s, non-profits, and other organizations who value our free service. They save hundreds of dollars each month by using us. Most businesses have flat rate long distance plans which make using our service virtually free. Lots of people also use their cell phone minutes, especially after hours when they have free minutes. You can conference up to 150 people for 6 hours on each call. FreeConference also has free desktop sharing, enabling you to show powerpoint presentations, spreadsheets, surf the web, or share photos all during your audio conference. You can use the online scheduling tools or just use our reservationless on-demand dial-in numbers.
Oh, and if you ever do want to spring for an Premium 800 number, we have those too, which also includes unlimited desktop sharing and free recording.

We are also now launching an Outlook add-in which will let users easily schedule conferences right from Outlook with all your conference numbers embedded right into the meeting details.

Thanks for your support. If you have any questions contact Customer Support
