We build a simple business expense tracking app for dealing with out of pocket expenses: www.paybackable.com

It works for our small firm, which has a few employees, but can also work for independent folks.

We just opened it up to outside folks, and are asking for feedback on how to make it better.

We grab receipts for everything, cash, credit, gas pumps, get it all. Every time we walk in the door, we deposit them in a multi-partition folder with partitions for cash, debit, each credit card, etc. At the end of each month we download bank statements, credit cards, etc. into Quicken, enter the cash receipts and audit the credit card/bank statements. Thanks to this method, we've caught a few 'mistakes'.

How to track business expenses? Charge everything, and then download the transactions into Quicken. Label everything in quicken with your categories. At tax time, it's simple -- just print out all your expenses.

And to my knowledge, phone *extras* like call waiting are deductible, even if the phone is used for personal stuff as well.

When you're self-employed, nearly everything is deductible.
