@Josh and Christopher, yeah, the coworking thing is a great idea. I’ve considered it but I exist in a grey space where I occasionally work from the bosses’ place. It could be an ideal solution though.

You may want to check out http://coworking.pbwiki.com/ and see if there are any locations near you. You long for the human interaction and that is what coworking can provide. I also agree that Tim Ferriss’s 4 Hour Workweek would let you dump the worry about saving for retirement and learn how to outsource everything that you don’t HAVE to do.

My fantasy is that I will know a bunch of other freelancers in my area, and we would socialize often, and serve as co-workers to each other. Meet up at coffee shops, get advice, etc.

I'm not sure where you are located, but finding coworking spaces may be able to address your concern about getting enough human contact. Think of it as an office environment for freelancers, who may come and go as their business requires them. I'm located in Boston, and know of a couple. this wiki seems to track coworking spaces by location.

Great post. A lot of people have a lot of illusions about freelancing/remote work.

@EB – Tim Ferriss would (I think) run screaming from the idea of freelancing. Way too much work and day-to-day accountability. I do agree that his book is (for the most part) a good read.

Personally, if you have not read it yet, I would strongly recommend reading Timothy Ferris' The Four Hour Work Week. Much of his advice in the book directly relates to the stresses you are explaining. Unfortunately, I am not yet a freelancer, but that is my goal for my life, and realizing it currently is my top priority. Thank you for a great article and I hope you don't go back to an office setting.
