This is a timely read for me, even though it's old news in internet age. I've been struggling with getting it all done, and although as a SAHM I am probably not your intended audience, I thought you might get a kick out of knowing it helped me, too.

Great suggestion. I've been running a series of posts all week on task list challenges, but missed this one. I created an interesting list of how I cope with too many items on my task list here: (<a href="http://blog.2glue.com/productivity/2007/08/just-too-dmn-bu.html" title="Task List Challenges" rel="nofollow">)

You make the comment that: "...think of tasks, not as amorphous blobs...". I think that is worth a post all until itself. A lot of procrastination and angst comes from folks just not spending time thinking about the task at hand. Once they do, they realize it is easy to break down or understand.

I also really resonated with: "...break them up into subtasks and timebox those..." I often find that many of my overdue, stress inducing tasks are actually projects that need to be further broken down. It is one of my big issues (<a href="http://blog.2glue.com/productivity/2007/08/task-list-cha-3.html" title="Implied Next Actions" rel="nofollow">

I think the reverse timeboxing concept will be most applicable for me. I have worked with web dev for long enough to be able to gauge how long most jobs *should* take me and I am quite prepared when writing an offer to a client to describe what we've already talked about and leave it at that.

But setting a period of time where I HAVE to do the tasks that I can quite happily push forward and forward in front of me would be a really good disciplinary idea. I've applied it before when I've needed to do telephone marketing for instance. THen, knowing that I have an hour of calls left to make and that I should get in as many as possible from the list is a really good motivator.

Where do they come up with these terms. I certainly like the idea though I always find things you think are 5 minute jobs end up taking much longer.
