I am currently reviewing web 2.0 technologies and the way business can use them for university and my own personal small business. Facebook is a DEFINITE for business. The perception of Facebook and other social media sites may be very different for people based on their exposure to the Internet, occupation, where they live, education, cultural background and age. Realistically, there is bias, preconceptions and prejudices based on these. What if I were to tell you I was your daughter’s age? Your Mother’s age? Your Grandmother’s age? What just flew through your thoughts? What if I told you I went to MIT or Harvard? Med school grad, lawyer or pro football player? Facebook does not permit you to keep age completely private to everyone. What business is it what age you are? Ageism is alive and thriving. So are other types of discrimination – from racism to obesity.

I think this article gives great background on the possibilities Facebook can bring. However I am inclined to agree with Debra in some respects. If the team at Facebook get it right then it can be an effective platform for both social and businesses.

I wonder how the information in this post would change based on the latest expansion of facebook? As someone who joined in 2005 when it was for college ppl, I now HATE facebook. I have stripped most of my content and made pics tagged of me unavailable. Most of my friends are on it, but no longer use it. I even de-activated my profile for several months and didn’t even miss it.

Too many people using it as a business tool rather than a social tool will kill it soon, even as the number of members continues to grow. The problem is that millions joined under ONE premise – that it was for socializing, and now that has changed dramatically. I feel duped. If it was not for social purposes, millions of users would never have added our precious pictures & other content just to be marketed to.

Interesting read….. but there is definitely a fine line between using Facebook to gain a professional advantage and having facebook be a distraction preventing you from doing your work.
