I use a door (from Lowes) and two 2-drawer file cabinets. It provides plenty of desktop space since you can get doors that are pretty large. The file cabinets are adjustable to fit the space I am in. The total cost was also pretty good compared to purchasing a desk.

When (if) I want to move up the file cabinets are reusable as plain storage.

I went the IKEA Galant route for my home office, but in the past I've used a door across two filling cabinets and once even a Rubbermaid tote for my computer and a case of soda as a chair.

I like the modern look and lower cost of the IKEA stuff. And if it comes with a 6'5" skinny blond dame, I would be even more happy!

Actually, I write from an ancient 6'x6' partner's desk that I got from a flea market for $45. The only thing I had to do to make it computer friendly was drill a 2" hole in the center for monitor cables.

The beauty of it is that it's double sided so that the GF and I can both work at our computers and face each other. It also has those old-timey side boards that I can pull out and expand my space, if needed.

I also use a board and cinderblocks for my monitor. Guess I should start looking for a new desk :)

I found my desk on the street on moving day. It's big - 30 inches by 60 inches - although it could be a little taller, I have problems hitting the keyboard tray. I should stick some hockey pucks under the legs.

My desk has 5 drawers, one of which has suspended files, (files were in the desk when I found it), and at $0 the price was right.

Making sure your chair can fit under properly helps. My current desk is pretty nice, but I have to sit awkwardly because the chair space isn't big enough for me to sit close.

Ikea Galant

This is the best desk I have ever had. It's big, cheap (under $200) and sturdy enough for me to stand one. It is not only wide, but is also deep enough for a 24" or 30" LCD. It doesn't have any shelving, which I see as an advantage, but could throw off some people. I really can't recommend it highly enough...

Well, my desk has survived moves from White Plains, NY and three stopovers in the East Bay. It's an Anthrocart and was easily the most expensive piece of computer equipment I ever acquired but also the best value I've ever received. --Highly recommended.

I gave up on computer desks a long time ago.

For me - and anyone who adheres to the KISS Principle - a 72 inch table is a sturdy solution that doesn't require any assembly, is easy to store and move, provides fifteen square feet of work space, and can be gotten for $50. Not terribly kid- or pet-proof, though.

Caught this desk on sale for $200
http://www.westelm.com/online/store/ProductDisplay?partNumber=WE-PRODf099&storeId=17001&langId=-1&catalogId=17002&viewSetCode=E&parentId=WE-SH1FRNSKS&retainNav=true&cmsrc=WE-SH1FRNSKS

Mine is a pear green color that is no longer offered and I absolutely LOVE it. It was easy to assemble and I was pleased with the quality. It's a very stylish desk and best of all the glossiness makes it easy to clean.

while i'm likewise not thrilled by ikea's selection (as most of it looks remarkably uncomfortable if you're not a 6'5" skinny blonde dane) don't count out the venerable Jerker desk. the desk height and monitor (shelf) heights are both infinitely adjustable, though you typically need a friend, 2 allen wrenches and oodles of patience (or beer) to get the job done.

also, i estimate i could park my truck on this thing, it's so sturdy.
