does it allow you to share a file with friends without picking at your password?

I started using twitter a few months ago, and have seen a noticeable increase in the traffic to my wordpress blog. I have used a plugin to link twitter to wordpress so that my twitter posts appear on my blog and my blog posts are announced to my twitter followers. I also noticed more typed in traffic to my blog by adding a background with my URL. I got a Pownce invite, and tried it out for a couple days and then went back to Twitter. I guess I should take another look at Pownce.

I think the best commentary about Pownce was on Twitter. It went something like "I thought Pownce was stupid, until I saw it was from Kevin Rose and Leah Culver!!"

Um, still doesn't make it any less stupid because of the people involved.

I find it overly intrusive, nothing interesting, and pretty much another Truemors - big name behind it, nothing yet of substance.

Yes, you can say the same of Twitter, but I find the options there somewhat more pleasing.

I use twitter mostly from my phone. There is no added benefit for me to switch as I can't text files or calendar items through Pownce on my phone anyway. I think anybody who switches might be locked into their desktop while twitterers will be more mobile.

[...] Web Worker Daily writes a great post on why Pownce may not have what it takes to survive the long term. “I’ve checked out Pownce, and while it seems to offer benefits over Twitter and it’s snail’s-pace release cycle, it may not live up to the buzz in the long term. Let’s take a look at a few features.” Full Article Here. [...]

Ultimately, there will be a point where most folks will be either Twitterers or Powncers although there will be a group that use both.

I doubt it, as most people haven't shown any interest in or need for Twitter, never mind an alternative. And besides, some new Web 2.0 service that solves a problem nobody has will appear to compete with them both.

for me it's going to be twitter. it's simpler, looks more 'open' to me, and it has tremendous momentum now.

all the other clones can have much better functionality or looks, but in the end, they're trying to do too much instead of doing one thing acceptably well: connecting you with as much friends/colleagues as possible

[...] While Pownce seems to offer a few benefits over Twitter, it’s really not markedly different and feels more like a bloated version of Twitter (perhaps the Pownce team forgot to read 37signals’ awesome Getting Real). A little competition is likely to get the Twitter folks to lift their game and improve stability (which has been good recently) and tweak functionality. Pownce is missing two key features for a Web 2.0 app - feeds and an open API. Neither are currently available and make Pownce feel incomplete. Words courtesy of WebWorkerDaily. [...]
