Great article. It's a pity that most people give so much of themselves to go after the corporate dream when all they need is in front of their eyes.

Great article, Mike! The health insurance aspect is something I dreaded about leaving a full time job to start my own business. If you don't need maternity coverage there are surprisingly affordable options out there.

Now if you could just talk my wife into letting us move somewhere where I can get 87 acres ;-)

I got a good laugh over this, thanks. Also, I wanted to split hairs on one point - office space. MS workers may or may not have three times the space of Google workers, but I think that might be dependent on what you do. I just finished an MS project. I was allocated a desk, but I worked at home. My desk was in an office hafl the size of my 10x10ft home office and was configured to hold FIVE people. It was like flying coach whenever I had to go on campus. I haven't seen Google's space, so I can't compare them to MS. I'm going to ask my Google pals about it, tho'.

And as always, hallelujah on the insurance. A big problem at our house where I'm the employed one, the employer is me, and that employer is too cheap to get a good plan.

Nice job - I found this insightful and humorous, especially the final paragraph about benefits. I heartily agree - health "insurance" is a BIG issue (I'm very fortunate to be covered well by my wife's employment).

I hope some Canadian web workers chime in with their perspective.
