At my last job, I received 400-500 emails a day. While I didn't need to respond to all of them (as many just were CC'ing me for my info), it caused a headache to keep organized.

This method seems like it would have worked pretty well, but finding emails would require a fast/robust search (something Outlook unfortunately does not have).

The method that worked best for me involved two 3rd party apps:
1) Clear Context - I used the free version, though the paid version is quite nice from a GTD perspective. The ability to "tag" an email with a topic, and automatically file it to a folder of the same name (you can even nest tags/folders by using a "/")
2) Google Desktop - To take care of the searching side.

Using these, you tag emails/threads. Any replies in the same thread are automatically tagged with the same topic. Tag like crazy, file things you'll need later, and delete everything else. Worked pretty well for me to stay on top of all those emails!
