I wouldn't use any of these sites to backup sensitive materials, that's not what they're designed for. They are extremely useful for sharing things without having to clog mailboxes or upload files to people multiple times.

I think you missed a really big one though, and by far the best one I've seen which is Mediafire.com. They offer unlimited file size, unlimited uploads, downloads and bandwidth... nobody else even comes close to that for free.

I am not sure I understand the sharing/secrecy options available. Those Download Links they geenrate are by no means secure. If I upload files there for others, those are better encrypted, since anybody can stumble accross them.

So for pictures there is no way to share them only with a limited group of people, right?

George says,

now that is scary to me...

Then don't use it. This is true for any/all web 2.0/asp service offerings, including salesforce.com. You either back your files up or risk losing them.

You want something more, I'm sure you can find it, but it will be priced to reflect the additional risk assumed by the service provider offering it, and it surely will not be "free". That's capitalism, pure and simple.

With all these online services coming, my biggest fear is waking up one day to find out my service provider is gone ... forever ... with all my stuff.

Reading through their terms of service:

... reserves the right to modify or discontinue the Service with or without notice to the Member. ..... Member acknowledges and accepts that Diversion Web Publishing does not guarantee continuous, uninterrupted or secure access to our web site ....

Pretty cool site. I have to say that I think I'm still partial to MediaFire.com though. they offer everything that DivShare has except the image hosting and they've got unlimited file size to boot. So if you need to share images, DivShare has a nice system, but for everything else www.MediaFire.com is superior.

Thanks for the info, I'll add this one on my list. You guys might also want to look at FileHo. It doesn't have the image gallery feature but also sports similar ones such as unlimited file size in uploads, unlimited file life and with an FTP feature.
