Peace and quiet would get my top vote. I work in a cube farm environment and it is quite noisy. So, loud in fact that I sometimes find it difficult to concentrate. I am a software developer and use the iPod to block sound, but sometimes I need complete silence to think. I have asked about getting some type of
soundproof wall installed, but am told that it's not an option.

[...] Web Worker Daily has a series of thought provoking predictions for 2007. (Of course, this time of year, who doesn’t?) What’s notable is the crystal ball bit about Starbuck launching a series of coworking cafes toward the end. From the piece: Wish 7: Starbucks introduces a chain of coworking cafes. Instead of jazzy music, customers would hear white-noise style nature sounds like waterfalls or babbling brooks. Wifi would be free, once you joined the coworking club for a reasonable yearly membership fee. Each coworking cafe would include rentable conference and napping rooms–even the most motivated web workers need a rest now and then. Customers could rent the use of large flat-panel displays for an hourly or daily fee. Personal coaches, massage therapists, and tech support specialists could offer appointments to soothe any career, body, or computer problems that arise while coworking. Bonus: a soundproof childcare room would keep the kids busy while Mom and Dad get their work done. [...]

Hmmm.. pretty interesting.

I have configured my work email to Gmail and sometimes use it to respond to urgent mails. Never realized, that it was made obvious that it was being sent from Gmail.

I have been using my pda as my mp3 player as well as my ebook reader. Actually, what I would like to have is a better Smartphone. Something which is more the size of an iPod. With better capacity to hold all my audio books that I need, all the mp3 songs and ebooks and pdf's and better battery life. I hate carrying multiple devices. Oh, and PDF reader for PDA's should have a read aloud feature like the desktop program. A slightly intelligent one will do.

I think the current features for web workers are pretty good. Now you get the office apps you need on the web (if you trust the provider with your data) and internet connectins are proliferating. I dont mind sitting and waiting to see where things will head off to in 2007.

Pam, you are absolutely right... web workers need a better solution for health care. Although this list focused more on tech than on other areas affecting web workers, the question of employee benefits is one we've been thinking about and will be covering in the new year. I am fortunate to be married to someone working in the traditional economy, so I get my benefits from him. I find it highly annoying that the best way to work in a new way is to associate yourself with someone working in the old way.

This is all great tech stuff, but this web worker wants, more than anything, to have a viable affordable useful health insurance plan.

Buying coops through associations seem to be dishing up the same plans a freelancer can get as an individual, agency plans are not that great and have COBRA issues when that contract ends, and going without seems, well, risky. (YMMV)

With the exception of consistent remote access, tools have kept up with my needs (which admittedly, are fairly uncomplicated for this tech writer.) Insurance, however, remains the thorn in the side of this otherwise mostly content Web Worker.

Google confirms that you're the owner of the email account you're mailing from before allowing you to do it. So it's not letting you email from just any old email address. There's no reason Google needs to populate the "Sender" field on the email header when it's merely functioning as a client for a different email account.

True, Google Apps for Domains will get around this... but that's not an option for people who want to use Gmail as a front end to an account at a domain controlled by someone else (e.g., their employer's domain).

You realize that Google can't let you email from just any old email address, right? That would make them an open relay and probably almost immediately the largest source of spam, phishing attacks and identity theft in the world.

Now, if you could make gmail an authoritative mail exchange for whatever domain (like you do with Google Apps for Domains), then you might have something.
